Traveling to new and exciting areas is an absolute blast, but there can be one definite drawback. The time you are there is usually far to brief and you rarely can immerse yourself in all the facets of the culture.Millions have asked it and few have ever come up with good answers. The question? How can I travel to a destination and actually stay there for more than a week or two?

The traditional answers to this problem have usually been pretty limited. The first is to do charitable work. Name just about any destination and there is some form of an NGO there. These groups can run from the religious oriented to environmental to…well, just about anything. They always need help and you can be involved in providing it. You have to pay our way there and you will not be paid for your volunteer work, but you get visa help and can usually stay for significant amounts of time.

Another common strategy is to teach English. English is the language of business around the world and everyone wants to learn it. There are usually private schools looking for teachers and they are often happy to bring native speakers aboard. There are a couple potential problems. They often want you to work a LOT and the pay is very small. Throw in tight housing and it can be an iffy proposition. That being said, it is a great way to see the world with longer stays at destinations.

There is a new strategy for staying in one spot that is becoming very popular. To be honest, it has been around forever, but has been under the radar. The strategy is to be a house sitter.

If you travel at all, you know there are high and low seasons for most destinations. What do you think happens during the low seasons? Many places shut down or go to a very minimal work load. Many of these locations are in need of someone to stay and watch the place. If the owners are Europeans or Americans, they often want someone similar.

On a smaller scale, more and more people are buying second homes in some pretty interesting destinations. These can include locations like Costa Rica, Brazil, Bulgaria on the Black Sea, Cabo San Lucas and so on. These same people are often looking for house sitters while they are away. You want to stay in destination “x” for six months or so. They need someone to stay in their home in destination “x” for six months or so. Now, that is math even I can do!

So, where do you find these golden opportunities? Well, the web is the spot. Just start searching to see the various sites. The caretaker gazette is one of the older sites and actually existed as a magazine far earlier than the internet. That being said, there are many other sites in the game now.
