Over the last five years, a total 25 million travellers have jetted off to enjoy luxury holidays in Spain with Ryanair, it has been announced. According to the budget airline, it expects to transport an additional 11 million passengers on 174 routes from 18 airports in Spain – including flights to Alicante and flights to Murcia. Ryanair first began carrying travellers to and from luxury holidays in Spain in 2002 with its flight between Frankfurt and Barcelona.

But when it comes to handling baggage, smaller budget airlines such as Ryanair and easyJet come out on top, said Jonathan French, spokesperson for the IAPA. “The irony of course is that the main culprit in losing baggage happens to be British Airways,” Mr French said. “They are supposedly one of the full service airlines, whereas the easyJets and the Ryanairs of the world, they have a much simpler structure to their route so there’s far less opportunity for bags to go astray,” he added.
The 24 members of the Association of European Airlines (AEA) reported that they had mishandled 15.7 bags for every thousand passengers carried. That works out at more than 5.6 million bags mishandled by those airlines last year alone. Of these airlines British Airways was by far the worst offender, losing more bags than any other AEA carrier, according to the association’s consumer repor.

“A big thank you to the 25 million passengers who have made our Spanish flights such a success,” commented Ryanair’s chief executive officer Michael O’Leary. He added that the budget airline now flies to every region in Spain. Mr O’Leary also noted that 13 million passengers travelled through the Catalonian regions of Girona and Reus on budget Ryanair flights.
Halifax, the high street bank, has identified a rise in the number of cheap flights offered by budget airlines as a major factor behind a trend toward numerous, shorter holidays throughout the year. A spokesperson for the bank added that with people taking more holidays to places like Spain each year, it was more sensible for holidaymakers to take out annual travel insurance rather than a number of policies for each trip.
“There is a trend towards more short breaks rather than one long summer holiday,” said David Bruce, a spokesperson for Halifax Travel Insurance. This was “partly due to cheap airlines making it a lot easier and more affordable for weekend breaks abroad,” he explained. He added: “More and more people are taking more than the traditional one summer holiday a year so it makes more sense to have annual cover.”

Low Cost Airlines to Spain
by Michael J Lee
Spain has seen a huge growth in tourism over the past 20 years, with many people taking advantage of the fact that there is almost year-round sunshine. Combine that with the rich history and diverse culture that the country has to offer and it makes an ideal place to spend your vacation. As a result of the many people who visit, the low cost airlines have gradually increased the number of routes to Spain and it has become one of the easiest places to get to a low cost airline from all parts of the U.K.

Most of the regional airports have at least one low cost airline flying to the most popular resorts. The Spanish government has spent large sums of money improving and upgrading the infrastructure of their airports, in order to better accommodate the increase in visitor numbers brought in by the low cost airlines. Road and rail links have been modernised, so as to speed your journey from the airport to your preferred choice of accommodation.
The vast choice of routes provided by the low cost airlines to Spain has also greatly helped U.K. residents who are fortunate enough to be able to afford a second home over there. Whichever location they choose, there will almost certainly be one of the low cost airlines flying to an airport close by, offering a greater choice of routes and more competitive prices. Whether flying to Spain for a break in the sun, or as an expat returning to the U.K., home owners are spoilt for choice.
You can search for your low cost airline to Spain in a number of different ways. Most companies invite you to book online, thus reducing their costs. Some budget airlines also allow you to book direct, but getting through to them on the telephone can sometimes be an achievement in itself. For the computer literate, it is a very simple matter to put your dates into their search engine and the work is done for you. There will usually be a choice of flights, allowing you to take a decision based on point of departure in the U.K., arrival airport in Spain and time of day. You just choose the low cost airline flight which suits you best.
It is often cheaper to fly with a low cost airline to Spain mid week, rather than at the weekend and if you are able to avoid school holidays, you will almost certainly come up with a better deal. Sometimes booking well in advance of your departure date will give you a cheaper seat, but also there are occasions when a better price can be obtained at the last minute. It often depends very much on how well tickets have sold for a particular flight.
One point to bear in mind, when comparing the low cost airline prices to Spain with those of a scheduled service, is that, in most cases, the amount you pay will just be for the seat on the plane and taxes. Very few of the low cost airlines offer any kind of free refreshments, inviting you to buy everything on board, usually at very inflated prices. However, for the reasonably short distances between the U.K. and Spain, it is often worthwhile giving up any extras and booking with a low cost airline, in order to receive a good price for your ticket.

Spain has become one of the easiest countries to reach by with direct flights from the U.K., thanks mainly to the low cost airlines who will now fly you to many regional airports, as well of the major cities. The large number of tourists that visit each year has helped increase the need for direct flights to Spain and with many people also having purchased second homes there, the whole of the country has become accessible by air.
The use of smaller airports has been helped by the Spanish government investing large sums in improving the road and rail links between cities and also by upgrading services at the airport itself.
When searching for your direct flights to Spain, often the best deals are to be had by booking through the internet. Some websites offer a search engine, which enable you to put in your details and the computer will then carry out a comprehensive search for flights that match your dates. If you book well ahead of your departure date, you will usually receive a better offer than by leaving it until the last minute, although occasionally a good deal can be had at the 11th hour, if you are able to delay booking your direct flight until just before you go.
Mid-week direct flights are generally better priced than those at the weekend and avoiding school holidays will definitely improve your chances of a good deal.
Direct flights to the less popular airports in Spain are well worth investigating, so make sure that you search by region, in addition to the place where you are actually staying, as often there are smaller, lesser used airports within driving distance that will work out cheaper. It might be worth considering booking each journey separately, especially if you are planning to tour around the Spanish countryside, as a single journey to one destination with a return from another, can often be more cost effective.
As a rule, the low cost airlines, such as Easyjet and Ryanair, will offer you a better price for your direct flights to Spain than using a scheduled service, but you may need to be prepared to give up such things as an in-flight meal and an allocated seat. Usually, the amount you pay for your ticket is purely the air fare plus taxes, which is why tickets offered by the low cost airlines are often referred to as having “no frills”. Refreshments have to be purchased on board, sometimes at very inflated prices, but usually your direct flight will be of no more than 2-3 hours in length, if traveling from the U.K. and the lower cost of your ticket makes this worthwhile.
If the cost of your direct flights to Spain is not an issue, a scheduled service with a large international carrier, such as British Airways or Iberia Airlines, may be your preferred choice. Usually, these flights would be from major airports in the U.K., such as London Heathrow, Gatwick or Manchester to one of the larger cities in Spain. There are fewer flights available from and to regional airports and they often have to be booked direct with the airline, or through a Travel Agent, which would be more expensive.
